I’ll make this quick; I’ve recently taken on a full time job for the summer, which means that The Anime Harvest will be a bit different for the next few months. I just don’t have the time to write as much as I have before, or even watch the anime I’d like to write about. But I don’t want this thing that I’ve been working on for over a year to just lay dormant for the next quarter of a year, so we’re going to do something different.
I often make fun of Studio Arms, not out of hate, but out of love. As much as I find the studio itself to be an amusing reference point for how depraved anime can get while still being as close to the mainstream as any show not named Dragon Ball Z or Attack on Titan gets, I also genuinely like their stuff. And we sometimes forget that, between Queen’s Blade, Ikkitousen and Elfen Lied, Arms did actually make Genshiken. So, out of respect for the studio I love to rag on, I’m going to review an OVA that can’t just be summed up with “It’s an Arms torture porn.” Today on The Anime Harvest, Mezzo Forte.
I’m a guy who likes adaptations. I think observing the change of a work from media into another can bring …
Sataness so far to have a decent idea of her character, but we haven’t really gone over it yet. So let’s get to that. What do we know about this monster? Well, apparently she’s running away from the school, she goes to work as a waitress in a cosplay café, she supposedly manages the Hinamizawa kids’ baseball team… We’ll unpack this as we go along.
b) Free spirit: For now, the school. As she’s running away she says, “More than anything, I was afraid of suffocating in this cage.” This is complemented by images of barbed wire. So she doesn’t like to be caged, controlled, she’s rowdy or disobedient. Good to know. She also lives in her own world, see 2a.
The fact that this is a sound novel comes through immediately, as the title screen is met by the sounds of cicadas, presumably higurashi, crying, and it sets the atmosphere. As the game starts, text comes across with the sound effect of something swinging, and hitting something soft. At first this seems like just the effect used with this text, but then it starts to come out of sync; someone is hitting something, or chopping someone.
After the brief intro, the user interface comes up in the bottom right corner. Aside from the basics (save, load, menu, and skip options), it includes a log which has about two scenes worth of the most recent text. This could be useful for making notes to figure out the mystery, but it doesn’t have any way to bookmark certain parts, and it doesn’t have a large enough backlog.

Ah, OPs. The sequence at the beginning of almost any anime that, when done right, tell you what to expect from the show and, when done really right, add to the show or even hold up all on their own. An OP can be better than a trailer when looking for new content, and are more memorable than any scene.
They are one of the things that distinguish anime from live action. Sure, live actions shows have open sequences, but not in the same way. They’re just a couple seconds long and typically focus on the setting or tone. In anime, OPs are a minute and a half, and good ones have a little of everything from the show. But why do they still exist?
