Our brief sense of peace at having thought we’d answered to the world of Higurashi came and went. And though …
So I spent the bulk of my evening watching Game Theory Live talk about Five Nights at Freddy’s last night, and enjoyed having my mind blown at a machine gun’s rate as new ideas came together, clues that even the theorists missed were brought to light, and Scott Cawthon himself started emailing hints to one of the show’s guests, and repeatedly updating his website. It was fun, but it also got me thinking, what madness has been made of a little mystery.
I’m not talking about coming up with a FNaF theory here; I don’t own and haven’t myself played any of the games, I get lost just watching Game Theory’s newer videos on the subject, and there are plenty of people on the internet who know a lot more than me about this. But that’s really what I’m talking about; the internet, and how it has changed mystery fiction.
Lately this anime blog has been flood with Higurashi content, perhaps even a little too much. So I decided it was time to take a moment and look at something completely different; review an anime that I’d never even watched before! And it was that thought that has brought us here, because indeed today on The Anime Harvest, a review of Ookami Kakushi.
Ookami Kakushi takes place in a small village where our protagonist, Hiroshi Kuzumi has just moved. Things get weird when he starts attending school, and one of his classmates mysteriously vanishes but everyone says he moved away- Oh come on, this is just Higurashi! It’s even got a mysterious purple-haired chick! I guess that’s what I get for picking my anime from Ryukishi07’s MAL page.
But I understand where Mr. Kojima is coming from; I was thirteen once, and I love to write, and I was a pervy little bugger who came up with all sorts of ridiculous situations and reasons why my characters would be virtually naked. Wrote fanfiction and did it with other people’s characters too. And just like Kojima, I eventually realized how ludicrous it was to have characters walking through snow in bikini’s, and came up with bullshit explanations like, “She’s allergic to everything except very small amounts of spandex,” or, oh I don’t know, “She breaths through her fucking skin.”
So despite this possibly being the thickest volume yet (and don’t worry, that won’t last; I’ve got the Massacre arc in front of me right now and oh boy, I don’t know how I’ll handle those!), I expect this will be one of the shorter sets of Higurashi volume notes. That’s been the issue with these chapters that were already in the first anime; I’ve seen them. Now, reviewing things, you’ll always find more. And there’s a lot in the manga that never made it into the anime, so I’ve found enough to talk about. But given how much we found out last time, I doubt this volume has much to offer beyond the plot that I’ve already seen and which shouldn’t do much for the overall mystery. I could be wrong, but either way I hope you’ll enjoy.
