Alright, the internet has gone mad after Trunks’ possible new Super Saiyan form in Dragon Ball Super episode 61, so I figured I’d slip back into to writing about the show to throw my theory in. I believe, in this episode, Trunks is right on the edge of achieving a new form, a mastered version of Super Saiyan 2.

So, before we understand what SSJ2 + Blue Aura means, we need to understand what Super Saiyan Blue is. This has been one of the most debated parts of the new Dragon Ball series. Is it just a version of Super Saiyan beyond SSJ3? Does it come from Super Saiyan God? Is Goku just using Instant Translocation to dye his hair real quick without anyone seeing? Is it stronger than SSJ4; yes it is, because things that aren’t canon are powerless.

I believe Super Saiyan Blue is just the mastered version of Super Saiyan. I’ve had this theory for a while, but I’ll go over it again.

I remember reading an interview a while back. I can’t find it now, but in it Toriyama suggested that Super Saiyans could improve their power through mastering ki control and output. This, I believe, is what Super Saiyan Blue comes from.

I started thinking about this when Kaio-Ken Blue was introduced in Goku’s fight against Hit. Goku said the reason he hasn’t used Kaio-Ken with any other form is because it’s such a difficult transformation to maintain; if he can’t control his ki, Kaio-Ken can destroy his body. But Blue is all about ki control.

Goku and Vegeta first used the form against Freeza, a fitting fight to reveal a powered up version of SSJ1. And the fact that Vegeta can use it at all suggests it’s not the same as pervious Super Saiyan transformations, like some kind of Super Saiyan 4 but less not-cannon. Vegeta can’t reach Super Saiyan 3, so Blue must be something different. (And before anyone brings up SSJ4 Vegeta, a) moonbeams, and b) still not cannon.)

But what about the connection to Super Saiyan God? Super Saiyan Blue was called Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan for a while because we’re all idiots who take Xenoverse too seriously. But yeah, when Goku fights Golden Freeza in the anime, Blue is described as relating to God.

In the Battle of the Gods movie, where we first see God, Goku loses the power partway through his fight with Beerus but manages to keep up anyway. Beerus says Goku learned from the transformation. In Super’s version of this fight, when Goku loses the God transformation he doesn’t revert to his normal form, instead he turns to SSJ1. At first Beerus says Goku made the power of the God transformation his own, but later says, “Maybe not.”

Goku learned from Super Saiyan God, he gained most of its power (not quite all, since he wasn’t able to go Blue in that fight), and it was from that that he was able to achieve Super Saiyan Blue after some more training. That’s the connection to the God form.

With that in mind, if there is a mastered Blue form of SSJ1, couldn’t there also be a mastered form of SSJ2? Super Saiyan Blue 2… Super Saiyan God Super Duper Super Saiyan… Let’s not let Xenoverse 2 name this one.

Trunks achieved Super Saiyan 2 in his version of the Buu arc, and since then has been training with it as his top form. He kept up with Super Saiyan 3 Goku in a fight, and has trained alongside Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta. He may technically be the weakest of the only three Saiyans that currently matter, but his Super Saiyan 2 form is well above anyone else’s. So it would make sense that Trunks has mastered Super Saiyan 2, and his new form is either its version of Blue, or right on the edge of its version of Blue.

The consequences of this are interesting. First, it would mean I’m right, and I’ve been right for months, and I’m never going to shut up about it.

Far less damaging, it would imply that there’s no longer going to be a single linear path for Saiyan progression. Say there’s a blue version of SSJ3; Goku might start using that. Meanwhile Trunks and Gohan will achieve some kind of SSJ2 Green, and Vegeta SSJ1 White. Which of those would be most powerful?

And speaking of Gohan, it would give him a chance to be relevant again. The show has hinted at him getting back into training with Piccolo. And, as the first person to achieve SSJ2, it would make sense for him to learn Trunks’ new transformation.

And finally, it might conclusively make GT non-canon. Goku couldn’t use SSJ3 in GT because his body couldn’t take it. But, if SSJB is as we’ve been lead to believe, it wouldn’t put the same physical stress on his body as other Super Saiyan forms. Meaning he had no reason not to use it in GT, unless it didn’t exist in GT, because GT is a separate timeline…

Wait, Trunks comes from a separate timeline, and he’s canon. Dragon Ball has allowed branching timelines and even parallel universes. And, with the release of Xenoverse, it confirmed the multitude of timelines and branch worlds.

So I guess everything is canon. Every movie, every game, every spin off… Oh my Super Saiyan God Super Duper Saiyan, the fanfiction is canon!
