30 Day Anime Challenge: Day 3 – What’s your Favourite Single Episode?

SoniAni: Super Sonico the Animation, episode 7. Man, it’s been a while since I talked about this. I have yet to watch any other episode of SoniAni, and I’m fine with that.

Here’s MAL’s synopsis on SoniAni:

“Sonico is more than just an attractive girl with a really huge set of… er… headphones. She is also an incredibly busy young woman who somehow juggles modelling and working at her grandmother’s bar while attending college and performing lead vocals and playing the guitar in the all-girl band Fastest Speed in Space. How she manages to squeeze it all in is as big a mystery as how she manages to squeeze into some of her outfits or paint her toenails without falling over, but somehow she always stays balanced and abreast of the situation.“

This ain’t the kind of thing I usually have good things to say about. But episode 7 is completely divorced from all that.

Sonico is taking a vacation day to travel out of the city, across the countryside, and into the mountains to visit a hot spring. And somehow, in an anime with that description, a hot spring does not trigger fan service.

It’s the tone of this episode that’s so great. It’s one of the most tranquil, lightly pensive viewing experiences anime has to offer. There’s barely any dialogue, and no real conflict. The experience for the viewer is just the same as the experience for Sonico. It’s getting away from a while. For a night, or just for 23 minutes.

It’s not brilliant, or meaningful. It’s not well written and the animation is nothing special. It’s not even part of a show I like, and I give no shits about the character. But this one episode never fails to help me relax and feel far away from any problems.
